Bipolar disorder is the modern term for what used to be called manic depression. But regardless of the name it now has, if you are suffering from it . or perhaps someone you know has the condition . it can be difficult to come to terms with it. This is particularly true in the early stages of having it.

Mental illness is not as much of a taboo subject as it used to be. This is a good thing, as more and more people are coming forward and recognising that they have a problem of some kind. There are signs to watch out for though, and if you spot some of these signs you may wish to consult your doctor for more advice. It doesn.t necessarily mean you have bipolar disorder, but you should get yourself checked out in any case.

Depression is one of the main signs that something is wrong. Of course lots of people suffer from some degree of depression at some time in their lives. If you simply feel a bit low there may well be nothing to worry about. What distinguishes those with bipolar disorder from those who have depression is that the depressive feelings are very persistent. They may also feel guilty without really realising that the guilt is completely unfounded. Small things will upset someone with bipolar disorder . things that the rest of us wouldn.t even think twice about.

Do you feel tired all the time? Most people experience some degree of tiredness but if you have the second type of bipolar disorder this can be extremely pronounced. Everything can seem exceptionally difficult to manage and get through. You might struggle to go into work every day, and when you are there the day drags on and you struggle to get through it. Everything will feel as if you are wading through treacle.

A lack of concentration affects all of us from time to time. But if you cannot seem to control your thoughts and they keep running away from you, then you might want to seek professional advice. Some bipolar people constantly start new projects and run with new ideas, only to drop them very quickly before picking up with something new. This is indicative of hypomania, a condition whereby all kinds of fantastic ideas will bombard you and you feel as if you will never get them all completed. The ironic thing is that this is very often true. The state of mind however is a classic symptom of the hypomanic part of bipolar disorder.

Hypomania can also lead to sexual feelings getting out of control. We all want to feel sexually satisfied, but someone who is bipolar may go to great lengths to try and achieve something they will never ever feel. You may not want to cheat on your partner, but if you are bipolar and in this state of mind your need to try and get rid of your sexual frustrations will override your logic. This is known as hypersexuality.

All four of these signs together should definitely be explored, since they can all point to a potential diagnosis of bipolar disorder. You should never be tempted to self diagnose though, or to ignore the symptoms if they continue for a prolonged period of time.

Always remember that there are treatments and medication available. These will help you or your loved one cope with the condition. The most important thing is to get the correct diagnosis from the start, so you can move forward and manage in a more positive way.
