Overcoming depression you may think could not even be possible if you are living with depression and battling the illness all your life. It is not like you want to be depressed. It is not like you don.t try to see things like other people. You wonder how they can do it. Some people seem to be so perky all the time. Don.t they have bills, and jobs, and life and stress? Just how come they can pull it off and you can.t.
The good news is that you don.t have to give up hope. There are ways to help you overcome depression even though you think the whole idea is useless or you are beyond hope. There are ways to bring joy back into you life once again.
One of the areas that researchers have been looking at for a while is pet therapy. Animals have been pets since time began and there is a reason for it. Animals can bring so much joy to our lives. Research is showing that animals, especially dogs, can help elderly people in auspices and nursing homes feel better and they can help people suffering from depression too.
There is more to this research than just psychological feelings of joy; there is now some biological proof that dogs can change our body chemistry. Seratonin is brain neurotransmitter that is responsible for regulation our moods. People with symptoms of depression do not have enough seratonin circulation in the brain and because of that people feel depressed almost all the time instead of having balanced moods like everyone else. The good news that researchers from the University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine found is that petting a dog for just 20 minutes in each day will not only be satisfactory psychologically it will raise the seratonin levels in the brain, This means that people with depression can raise their levels of seratonin naturally without the aid of drugs. Now, this article is not suggesting that if you are taking medication you should stop. You would need to speak with your doctor about that, but getting a dog if you do not already have one may certainly help you feel better especially if you live alone.
Dogs not only provide joy they provide comfort. Many times dogs can sense their owners are sad and they will lay their head on their owners lap, or actually lick away the tears. Sometimes a person suffering from depression does not get that kind of support and comfort even from the humans in their lives. Dogs are wonderful pets to have especially if you live alone. There is nothing like coming home after a hard day.s working to an animal that is genuinely happy to see you. The sight of a dog waiting for you in the window or the dog wagging his tail is proof that you are loved. Dogs provide unconditional love; they don.t care if you are beautiful, handicapped, ill, or not the most popular guy on the block. They are just genuinely happy to be in your company.
Dogs will also give you a purpose in life. You have to feed the dog, bathe the dog, brush him, take care of his veterinary visits and take him out for walks. This gives you something to do and the joy is in knowing that another living creature is depending on you for their well-being. When you go out for walks with the dog you are both benefiting because you are getting in fresh air and exercise as well. You can have fun playing games in the park with your dog or you just sit and watch him having fun and perhaps talk to other people who are with their dogs as well.
