Depression is a mental illness that most of us can relate to. Depression affects millions of people across American and millions more across the world. Look around at the various people in your live, at the office, or walking down the street. Most of the these people will have had at least one episode of depression in their lives and some may be suffering from it right now and nobody else really knows about it. Depression is more than just the blues it is a mood disorder that can affect every aspect of a person.s life. People with depression lack energy and motivation to do the things they formerly liked to do in life. Depression can affect the decisions they make, their work on their jobs, their family life and even their sex life. Depression can cause people to lose their sex drives.
People with depression can also suffer from other mood disorders such as anxiety and panic attacks. Many people with depression and or depression with anxiety are embarrassed, ashamed, and feel guilty for the way they are feeling. They often hide their symptoms from other people, sometimes the vary people who can help them the most. Some will get help from therapists and psychiatrists. Keep in mind, these are the people whose cases are milder and they still have the will to help themselves. Others are taken to psychiatrists by concerned family and friends and they are given prescription medications, and still others self medicate by abusing alcohol and recreational drugs.
It is very important that anyone suffering from depression and depression with anxiety symptoms get treatment in order to live a healthy productive life. The current theory is that depression is a result of a chemical imbalance of the neurotransmitters in the brain, namely seratonin and dopamine. Some people with major depression with do well on the seratonin reuptake inhibitors and others don.t respond as well. This medication has no effect on people who do not require this medication and so people with moderate and mild depression do not benefit that well from these drugs.
It is absolutely important to understand that medication is just one factor that helps only certain people who suffer from depression. Depression is also due to situational stressors, environmental factors and so much. Medication can also have serious side affects and produce either a physical or psychological dependency. The physical dependency can cause a myriad of feelings in the body if the drug is not given, but the psychological effects can also cause people to think that they cannot function without medication and that cannot be further from the truth.
Sometimes life gets you down. There just is so much going on that you just feel that you cannot handle it. Therefore you have to understand that there is no such thing as a happy pill. You need to address these issues in your life which are causing you so much anxiety, worry and despair.
If you are looking for natural ways to relieve anxiety try doing some exercise, take up a sport or just go for a good walk. Your mind is going to fight the thought of doing it but tell yourself you are in control and walking is good for you. Exercise will even increase the seratonin levels in your brain and endorphins will give you a natural high.
You will also need to do some introspection. Find out what is troubling you. What is causing the panic attacks or the bouts of depression? Keep a journal and see a counselor who can help you to organize your thoughts and find meaning into what is happening in your life and why. You can and will feel better and you can take your life back.
