Bipolar disorder is the manic phase of psychosis that can strike everyone, even kids although this is rare, at some point in his or her lives for various reasons. Depression, formally called major depression, major depressive disorder or clinical depression incorporate the mind, but also integrates the entire body. As the mind breaks down so does the body which leaves an individual.s immune system susceptible to disease. Some of the signs of bipolar disorders include

Loss of interest and or hopelessness

Fake ideas of what is currently happening

Crying spells, lack of sleep, lack of concentration, and irritability

Restlessness, fatigued or weak, feeling of worthlessness

Thoughts of suicide, suicidal behavior, and physical ailments

Loss of a sense of reality

Medical communities around the country are walking a very fine line when diagnosing bipolar with kids because many of the outward symptoms are deceiving because of their close relationship to attention deficit disorder, or ADHD. However the grandiose behaviors, flight of ideas, elated moods, decreased need for sleep, and hyper-sexuality are signals that something is not right.

However, when the medical physician is dealing with children there are precautions in place to avoid any unwanted side effects that the specialized medication designed for kids may complicate.

However to determine the exact cause that triggers signs of bipolar disorder reaction with many kids is scientifically unexplainable, yet it does exist. It is possible that perhaps the imbalance or reaction to biochemical, genetic and environmental factors contribute.

Side effects that are particularly troublesome for the medical community is the atypical neuroleptics, with the one exception of aripiprazloe which are associated with marked and rapid weight gain in kids. Unfortunately there still are no medications specifically designed for use by kids, leaving them vulnerable to adult medications at a reduced dosage dictated by the logic and skills of the medical physician. Presently there are three main types of medication drugs for use by kids inflicted with bipolar disorder.

Lithium medication

Anticonvulsants such as Depakote or other valproate produces

atypical neuroleptics such as risperidone, ziprasidone, and aripiprazole

Biochemical is a reaction to change in brain function that is a natural occurrence. The study incorporating the genes leans towards a biological or genetic disorder that follows family lines. Then there is the environmental factor that plays a fairly large role in depression through the death of a family member, loss of employment, and at times personal financial situations

Kids suffering from a form of depression will emotionally feel down in the dumps and develop a more pessimistic attitude for longer periods of time. Kids suffering from bipolar disorder have extreme mood swings from exuberantly happy to being so down all they will do is stay to themselves. The spectrum is exactly what this mood swing represents.

Kids diagnosed with bipolar disorders will also sleep most of the day away, and spend hours in tears usually for no specific reason. Depression in any form is unhealthy for the individual and is the reason for specific medication, or a drastic change in diet. A well in tune medical physician or psychiatrist can write out a prescription for the depression drugs that will help the individual balance and maintain a more mainstream attitude.

Other conditions where childhood bipolar disorders are present now include postpartum psychosis, dementia, depressive episodes, Parkinson.s disease, and multiple sclerosis. This unfortunately is a very widespread disease and affects many individuals today. Some of the various forms of bipolar psychosis include the following.

Hallucinations associated with schizophrenia

Delusions affecting the facts of reality

Paranoia which is present in many other depressive disorders

Catatonia which is a symptom of schizophrenia, unresponsive

Typical manic depression symptoms can be varied and inconsistent, so it is best to be thoroughly checked by a licensed physician, such as your family doctor, to have an evaluation. Below are some of the common signs and symptoms that are associated with manic depression. Finding information about the illness is an important first step, as well as becoming educated to what exactly the disorder entails. Arming yourself with the knowledge concerning the condition will make it easier to understand your symptoms and will also help you to know when to discuss them with your doctor.

First thing that you need to know is that having a bipolar disorder, such as manic depression is a disorder of the brain and it causes shifts in many emotional behaviors. Severe swings of energy, mood, activity levels, emotions and basic functioning of everyday tasks are common with a manic depressive illness or bipolar disorder. These swings are not the usual up or down feelings that everyone experiences every once in a while, they are more extensive than the daily emotional feelings. Some people never even realize that they have manic depression symptoms until it has gotten to the point of extremity.

Episodes of manic extremes can be present for long periods of time and then the depressive episode will begin. There could possibly even be periods of normalcy in between the two. In order to fully be diagnosed with manic depression, however, the bouts with either manic or depressive episodes will last at least one or two weeks at a time. Manic behaviors normally last up to four days or longer, while the depressive behaviors can last longer; up to two weeks or more. Some of the symptoms may seem normal and without cause for alarm, but there are individuals that have the disorder that actually have trouble with their normal tasks of the day.

Some of the symptoms of the manic episode may include euphoria, sleeplessness, an increased energy level, lower inhibitions, racing speech and thoughts, unfinished tasks and uncharacteristic behaviors, such as doing things that you normally would not do. Sometimes the manic episodes can consist of very dangerous types of behaviors like having sex with more than one partner, spending money unnecessarily, having sex with strangers and doing reckless activities to which you would not usually be inclined to do. Having trouble sleeping is also a manic depression symptom when it takes away from your ability to function normally.

Depressive symptoms, on the other hand, could include extreme unhappiness, lethargy, feelings of guilt, losing your appetite, sleep disturbances, self hatred, feeling hopeless, becoming isolated and having suicidal thoughts and feelings. There could be episodes of psychosis in both manic and depressive conditions, but it is not always present. Hallucinations and delusional behavior will be evident within the psychosis, so either of these could accompany the manic depression symptoms. It is not necessarily always involved in the manic or depressive moods, but if you experience these, you should check with your doctor to discover the cause of the episodes.

It is important to remember that some of the feelings and moods will occur during a normal day and could simply be caused by life happenings. It does not automatically mean that you have a manic depression issue, although when the symptoms last longer than normal it is best to discuss the possibility with your own physician. Many people live long and productive lives with the condition with the assistance of programs, medications and therapy. The important part is to have an accurate diagnosis and to begin the treatment process. Gaining knowledge and following the advice of your doctor can allow you to live a perfectly normal life without anyone even knowing that you have an illness.

Many medical physicians not fully educated will diagnose bipolar disorder just as depression and therefore the treatment and medication will have less of an effect on the individual.
Individuals suffering from a form of depression will emotionally feel down in the dumps and develop a more pessimistic attitude for longer periods of time. An individual suffering from bipolar system has extreme mood swings from exuberantly happy to being so down all they will do is stay to themselves. The spectrum is exactly what this mood swing represents.

Individuals suffering from episodes of depression are not alone either because their family members and their close friends suffer with them. In other words, this is difficult for many individuals because the effects contribute to relationships of all kinds. An individual receiving a medical diagnosis and being prescribed antidepressant medication is not the only to live happily.

Sometimes taking medication alone is not sufficient to bringing the individual back into balance. There are diet plans that an individual can follow faithfully to coincide with various prescription medications they are currently taking. Good nutrition along with depression support, depression therapy, and depression medication prescribed by a medical physician all work hand in hand to aid the individual to the road to recovery.

Mental illness symptoms affect everyone at some point in life. What is important is how the individual and those close family members handle the situation before it escalates and becomes worse. There are a few forms of mental illness systems and therapy the individual can indulge in while in the home such as meditation therapy, writing therapy, and aroma therapy to assist the individual in rising to and staying with a healthy frame of mind.

Going outside for a long, slow, relaxing walk with a friend or two or even a rewarding bicycle ride around the neighborhood is positive therapy. Any type of exercise is good therapy, perhaps a game, or two of bowling when a few family members or close friends are available.

Mental illness symptoms can and sometimes does destroy families as well as bring them together, it really depends upon the strength of the family as to what the outcome will generate. Overcoming mental illness symptoms is difficult for anyone and the more severe the depression, the more difficult it becomes to get through.

There are group therapy sessions that will offer help, but the medical physician, psychologist, or psychiatrist will need to suggest this approach and the individual will have to decide whether to accept the information. Understand this is a very big step for the individual to take. There are over the counter medicines that the individual can take, such as St. John.s Wort, but the individual still needs to consult with a medical physician, psychologist, or psychiatrist before taking it.

Other types of over the counter medication the individual can try is magnesium, fish oil, omega three, multi-vitamins high in iron, vitamin D, and vitamin B as a boost to the system. Indulging in the adding of an assortment if fish to the daily or perhaps weekly diet is another source to look into as there are many who claim it is a mood enhancer.

However the individual needs to be careful when dealing with a mental illness symptoms especially when the individual is not sure of the severity they are afflicted. Other foods that are high in tryptophan are food items such as turkey, tuna fish, bananas, and chocolate. However, chocolate is one of those items that the individual eats sparingly, as it is more of a comfort food.

Individuals suffering from various signs of mental illness it would be wise to visit with a medical physician and will receive a more accurate diagnosis. Whether the individual decides to remain with the advice of the medical physician or if the mental illness symptoms are not very severe the individual may attempt to handle it through sheer determination, family members, and close friends.

Setting up a daily routine to help organize the individual.s life is a step in the positive direction as well. Deciding what the individual.s interest is and acting upon them will help to build self-esteem and confidence that accomplishments are possible. All depression medication serves a purpose, but the individual is much better off with the least amount of medication. Sooner or later the individual must learn to understand their own limitations like everyone must.

Personal therapy not from a counselor, but from a psychologist might also be in order for the individual to iron out the simpler difficulties. Through this type of mental illness symptoms therapy the individual will learn how to find their way through the most difficult situations the individual must face during the span of a lifetime. Sometimes just sitting back , relaxing, and listening to some choice favorite music is enough to help the individual to exhale and relax before trying to tackle the next given situation.

Individuals who suffer from depression mental illness ranging from minor depression to severe depression, the treatments are there to help assist all. All who suffer and are taking any one of the various medications will also need constant depression support and there are many support groups that any individual can attend. The individual will need to discuss with the medical physician which group will be best for the level of depression and go from there.

An individual diagnosed with depression mental illness will have to realize to read the labels on the various medications though before deciding to hope into their automobile and drive off to a meeting or gathering. Some of the medications will have warnings of not to drive while under the influence because they are mind altering drugs.

Newer atypical depression mental illness drugs also have a few side effects which target other neurotransmitters either alone or in addition to serotonin. The effects of the depression mental illness effects seem to show up through nor-epinephrine and dopamine. Some of the more prominent medications include:

Bupropion (Wellbutrin) and Mirtazapine (Remeron)

Venlafaxine (Effexor) and Trazodone (Desyrel)

Duloxetine (Cymbalta) and Nefazodone (Serzone)

Information that many individuals would find interesting is that bipolar mental illness patients were at one time a reference to manic depressants. However, why the change in the term when the symptoms remain the same? Depression mental illness means that life has many extreme ups and downs and this in itself is enough to send any individual into a major tailspin.

Difficult as the situation is for the individual to deal with, it is also difficult for the family members. To have emotions swing so far is physically taxing on any individual suffering and it is difficult for friends to deal with whom walk away confused. Unfortunately the individual suffering never feels content because of these wide mood swings and therefore the reason for the medication. The medication will help to control the mood swings and keep the individual more balanced.

Today it is interesting is the fact that depression mental illness comes in many different forms, but the mood swings vary greatly. Unfortunately, finding a medical physician that can diagnose depression mental illness correctly are few. Many medical physicians not fully educated will diagnosis depression mental illness and therefore the treatment and medication prescribed will help to bring the individual back into balance.

However, the multitude of medications the individual needs to be careful and make notes of any side effects. This will aid with the next visit with the medical physician because the medication can be changed, increased, or decreased depending upon the need of the individual. The entire premise is to aid in the progress of the individual to a healthier state of mind than when the individual first came to the medical physician.s office. When the medical physician begins to see changes not in a positive direction the medical physician may prescribe another medication either to replace the one the individual is currently taking or to take along with the original medication to help compliment.

Individuals fighting depression mental disorder must seek the help and assistance from family members and seek a medical physician who deals with depression mental illness therapy to gain the aid that the individual requires. Sometimes, the individual may wish to stay in the home and sleep the day away, but this is not a healthy attitude nor is this a healthy state for anyone to live in. By accessing a medical physician the individual will have the opportunity for an examination to determine the current health status and move on to receiving a bipolar mental illness depression test to find out the severity of the situation.

Families who are suffering from the effects of a family member involved with schizophrenia and or depression in general need to gain the assistance of the medical community. Many times it is the individual who the family must convince to see the family medical physician to arrange for a series of tests and to have a complete physical examination.

Try to make certain there are no major physical ailments that might cause any of the hallucination symptoms displayed. When this procedure reaches completion the medical physician will sit down with the family members to explain the best course of action to proceed.

However, to determine the exact cause that is triggering the signs of hallucinations or depression in general is difficult to assess. Perhaps the imbalance of reaction to biochemical, genetic, and environmental factors plays a role. Biochemical is the reaction to change the brain function that is a natural occurrence.

However, the study incorporating the genes leans towards a biological or genetic disorder that follows in family lines. Then there is the environmental factor that plays a fairly large role in depression through the death of a family member, loss of employment, and at times personal financial situations

Statistically with any given year there are on average twelve million adults in the United States with depression and part of these statistics are those diagnosed with hallucinations. There are a series of examinations including the physical examination, laboratory tests which include a complete blood count (CBC), screening for alcohol and drugs, and a check of the thyroid function.

Psychological evaluations come last to evaluate thoughts, emotions, behavior patterns and the medical examiner will try to ascertain what caused the onset of the schizophrenia. Regardless of the desired treatment decided upon, psychotherapy, depression medication, or a combination of medications most individuals who receive a diagnosis of some form of depression can be treated safely as an outpatient with regular scheduled appointments.

However, there is no known cure for hallucinations, there are various treatment options available to sufferers with this disorder. The treatment of hallucinations today is very effective in most cases in the suppression of symptoms and the prevention of relapses. Some of the more current treatments for sufferers of hallucinations are the following.

Antipsychotics medication helps about seventy percent of sufferers

Antidepressant medication reduces the symptoms dramatically

Psychotherapy is highly recommended behavioral treatment

Alternative treatments such as dietary supplements

Many symptoms of hallucinations with depression in general make it difficult to pin point the severity the individual has because it may be complicated with more than one of the depression symptoms. In this case, treatment through one of the various antidepressants in conjunction with behavioral therapy is advisable to help the individual regain self-esteem and confidence one-step at a time.

Unfortunately, without any treatment, which sometimes occurs when individuals refuse to acknowledge they even need help, the symptoms will continue to fester until the individual can no longer stand the psychological agony.

Individuals receiving outpatient care needs family members to help monitor the daily situations keep track of the depression symptoms the individual is suffering. The medical physician or depression therapist will talk with the family members and try to explain in which direction they are to focus.

Therapists will explain the many changes so the family members fully understand what is about to occur. Part of the hallucinations with depression in general therapy is to change the daily diet by reducing the sugar intake and increasing the protein. This can be challenging, but the family will soon get the idea and keeping fruits and nuts in the house will be a plus for the individual.

Bipolar l disorder or manic depressive disorder is characterized by severe episodes of highs and lows. The symptoms will occur for at least a week. Bipolar l disorder is considered the most severe form of bipolar disorder. A person with bipolar l disorder will be socially impaired by their actions. Bipolar l disorder can impair a person.s daily ability to function. The primary trait in bipolar l disorder is mania. Mania is the greek word for madness. Mania is characterized by an unusually elevated mood which may or may not be followed by a depressed mood. When in mania the actions of the person experiencing mania can be so severe that a mild depression may follow. Mania symptoms are listed as the following: a euphoric feeling, a decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, risk taking, increased goal making, distractibility, talkativeness, irritability, a feeling of invincibility, increased sexual behavior, impulsiveness, involvement in negative social situations, rage, agitation, hallucinations, delusions, grandiosity, markedly increased energy and rapid, loud speech. If untreated the mania can turn into a psychosis and lead to hospitalization. In addition untreated mania can last from a few days to years. People with mania will exhibit rash behaviors like making purchases beyond their means, having sexual encounters with strangers, and/or make unrealistic plans. In mania a person is out of touch with reality. Some people with bipolar disorder may go through rapid cycling; which is the onset of bipolar disorder can occur from the early teens and into the twenties. All people diagnosed with bipolar l disorder are diagnosed and treated before the age of fifty. Bipolar disorder affects males and females equally. Children are also found to be affected by bipolar l. With bipolar l disorder there may be a genetic predisposition to the disease, if a parent has been diagnosed the chances of a child having some form of bipolar l disease are great. Also stress can play a role in triggering a bipolar l episode. And environment can be a trigger as well. Also including sleep deprivation, drug and substance abuse, treatment with just anti depressants, major trauma, or a biological reason such as a chemical imbalance in the brain (the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine are not functioning correctly). Some people with bipolar l disorder may go without any symptoms for notable periods of time. Diagnosis for bipolar l is based on the patients. past history of mental illness, self reported experiences, family history of mental illness, patients. current demeanor – reasoning ability, memory, ability to concentrate or focus, ability for self expression, interpersonal relationships, home environment, and involvement in social situations. This does not mean the person has been cured; it is how the cycle of bipolar l disorder runs. Bipolar l disorder is an incurable but treatable mental disorder. Treatment for bipolar l disorder can include the use of several medications, for example, lithium which is a mood stabilizer, Seroquel which is an anti psychotic, abilify which is an anti psychotic, depakote which is an anti seizure medication that is used as a mood stabilizer. There are many medications that are used to treat bipolar l disorder; however other forms of treatment are used as well. The other methods of treating bipolar disorder are; electroconvulsive therapy also known as shock treatment. Electro shock therapy is considered an effective treatment for manic symptoms. Involuntary commitment, psychotherapy, clinical psychology, psychotherapy, voluntary commitment, changes in eating and sleeping habits, stopping drug and substance abuse, dietary changes such as stopping caffeine intake, eating healthier foods to maintain weight, and positive supportive help from family and friends. Also there are organizations, like live strong.com, medicine.net, and bipolar.com that can help or lead to help.

In the past mental illness was diagnosed as demonic possession or collusion with the devil. People were punished for mental illness instead of helped. The treatments at that time were horrific for those suffering from mental illness. The misdiagnosis of mental illness then was partially due to ignorance and partially due to the misunderstanding of mental illness altogether. Currently when doctors need to diagnose mental illness it is done based on signs and symptoms. The signs and symptoms are presented as behaviors, feelings, unusual thoughts, and physical signs and symptoms. Mental illness can be perplexing to diagnose because the symptoms of some physical ailments can appear like a symptom for a mental illness.

Bipolar disorder or manic depression is difficult to diagnose because there is no customary test. A psychiatrist has to diagnose a person for bipolar disorder by enacting the following: by taking detailed notes of symptoms including the severity of symptoms, the duration and the frequency, by questioning family history of mental illness, by observing behavior and by speaking honestly about symptoms with the patient. As a matter of fact the most important part of a diagnosis is conferencing with the patient about their symptoms; this will work toward preventing misdiagnosis. In asking the patient questions about symptoms the questions will focus on reasoning ability, memory, the ability to express, and the ability to maintain relationships. There are no medical tests to confirm a case of bipolar disorder; instead doctors in the mental health field use the American Psychiatric Associations.- DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders) as their guideline to diagnose bipolar disorder.

The DSM contains the following diagnostic criteria for determination of a manic episode: a period of abnormally and persistent elevated, expansive or irritable mood with symptoms lasting for one week. If hospitalized the symptoms can be of any duration and while in the mood disturbance, three or more of the following listed symptoms must be present for a meaningful period of time; inflated self esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, talkativeness or pressure to keep talking, flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing, distractibility, increase in goal directed activity, increased involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for severe consequences. The following is also necessary for diagnosis of a manic episode: the symptoms cannot meet the criteria for a mixed episode, the disturbance is enough to cause noticeable impairment in lifestyle, or the episode is not due to drug or substance abuse.

The DSM contains the following criteria for determination of a depressive episode: The symptoms must occur for a two week interval and the onset of the symptoms must be a change from prior functioning and there must be the presence of either a loss of interest or depressed mood. Also five or more of the following symptoms must be present; depressed mood most of the day on a daily basis, a marked diminishing of interest in all or almost all pleasurable activities, significant weight loss or weight gain, insomnia or hypersomnia daily, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigued daily, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, diminished ability to think or concentrate almost daily and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide ideation. The following is also necessary for diagnosis of a depressive episode: cannot meet the criteria for a mixed episode, the symptoms cause significant social impairment, the symptoms are not due to drug or substance abuse, the symptoms are not due to bereavement, or the symptoms endure for more than two months. Although not a medical test, the methods used for bipolar disorder diagnosing have been found to be fairly accurate, millions of men, women and children are diagnosed and receive treatment yearly in the united states.
